Brebbia Oom Paul Sabbiata Sandblasted Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Named for the company’s home township, Brebbia was founded in 1953 by Enea Buzzi, an alum of Savinelli’s manufacturing division. Still in operation 70 years later, Brebbia is one of Italy’s oldest extant pipe companies, with production still being undertaken using simple lathes and traditional methods of hand finishing. More recently, Brebbia has also collaborated with master artisan carvers from across to design some of its pipes, such as Denmark’s Rainer Barbi, Germany’s Otto Pollner and Holger Frickert, Italy’s Fausto Fincato, and Japan’s Tsuge. The basic Oom Paul shape has roots (excuse the pun) that extend far beyond the birth of briar pipes, but with the emergence of the latter, countless brands and figures would create their own distinct renditions in the new standard medium. From Peterson to Sasieni, from Ed Burak to Tom Eltang, there has been a great variety of great Oom Paul designs from great briar pipe makers. Brebbia’s Oom Paul is the same on all three counts, though its composition is quite unique in how it blends its various design elements. Some of these elements are very traditional and call back to a time before briar, such as the pipe’s wind cap and oversized stature; others are far more modern, such as the variety of finishes Brebbia offers for its Oom Paul series. The Oom Paul is today one of Brebbia’s most popular pipes, and understandably so.
