Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Danske Club was a German market sub-brand made by Stanwell around the 1990s-2000s. Whether it was a “seconds” brand, like Royal Danish, or more of a market-specific exclusive, like Danish Sovereign, I’m not too sure, though from personal experience I do know that they were plenty nice, and an extra opportunity to find Stanwell shapes that were a little more difficult to locate. This one takes the form of Stanwell’s shape “84,” a Danish apple rendition designed for Stanwell by Tom Eltang in the 1980s. Stanwell was clearly quite proud of the shape, as it not only remained in production for several decades after its debut, but was also included in the limited run Poul Stanwell Collection during the 2000s. This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to accommodate 9mm filters if desired. Details: Length: 6.2″ / 157.4mm Bowl Width: 0.79 / 20.06mm Bowl Depth: 1.65″ / 41.91mm Weight: 2.1oz / 62g
