Celius Root Knight 16 Smooth Freehand Pickaxe Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Svend Axel Celius got his start in one of Denmark’s founding post-war pipe workshops: Suhr’s Pibemageri. It’s hard to overstate how important Suhr’s was for Scandinavian pipe making, with many of its original greats, such as Poul Rasmussen, Sixten Ivarsson, Emil Chonowitsch, Sven Knudsen, Peter “Brakner” Micklson, and Hans “Former” Nielsen being among its resident artisans. Celius too was one of those artisans, learning the craft under Rasmussen and Knudsen before moving on to Pibe-Dan and to his own workshop, through which he made Celius-brand pipes. Though he was very versatile as a pipe maker, Celius was well known for his “freehand” style pipes, and was one of the pioneers of the “Danish fancy,” along with Preben Holm, Erik Nording, and Viggo Nielsen. As with this pipe, Celius’s signature approach to freehand pipes was characterized by an affinity for bold, plateaux-topped pickaxe renditions. While it is an assertive piece, this Knight-grade one is surprisingly lightweight, which should make for a relatively comfortable clencher. The condition is good.
