Fribourg & Treyer Reject Sandblasted Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

While there are many historic tobacconists, few can claim to be quite as historic as Fribourg & Treyer. Situated in London’s Westminster borough, Fribourg & Treyer was founded in 1720, and continued its operations until its closure in 1980. As with many major tobacconists, Fribourg & Treyer had house-make briar pipes created for their shops by the great English factories of the 20th century. One minor mystery that’s emerged through my years of selling estate pipes concerns Fribourg & Treyer. Specifically, it’s their “Reject” pipes. I’ve seen hundreds of F&T pipes, and what’s stood out is the sheer number of them that were stamped as such. I sometimes joke that I’ve seen more F&T Rejects than I have F&T non-rejects. Perhaps there’s a special club that I’m not part of, or perhaps F&T simply sold lots of them. The other notable thing about F%T is that their Rejects are nicer than a lot of main-brand pipes, let alone sub-brands. This one is a classic, lightweight Lovat, with a very crisp, tan sandblast. The blasting is a little craggy and irregular, but isn’t that what people like these days? The condition is very good. Minor rim darkening and chamber slightly over-reamed.
