While “Uncle Paul” is the English translation of “Oom Paul,” which is itself the name of a very traditional Anglo-French shape, I did wonder, looking at this pipe, whether it seemed a little more modern and, specifically, a little more Italian. The shaping is very reminiscent of certain post-war Italian approaches to the Oom Paul shape, most notably Castello and the early Caminetto. According to Colwell and Wilczak and their Who Made That Pipe?, my suspicions would seem to be on the mark. While this “Uncle Paul” wasn’t made by Castello, Caminetto, or indeed any workshop affiliated with that school, it was made by Lorenzo, an established Italian make during the 20th century. The condition is fair. Slight rim charring and stem slightly over-buffed. Details: Length: 5.5″ / 139.7mm Bowl Width: 0.81 / 20.57mm Bowl Depth: 2.07″ / 52.57mm Weight: 2.3oz / 68g
